“DORÉ DORÉ: The Elegance of French Socks” exhibition is on show at the MUSÉE DE LA BONNETERIE (Museum Of Hosiery) in Troyes until 3rd January 2021
To celebrate its 200th anniversary, Doré Doré 1819 is the subject of a beautiful, engaging exhibition. The show runs from February 18 until January 3 2021 at the Hosiery Museum in Troyes, a centre of France's textile industry.

The exhibition is named "1819-2019: For 200 years, DD has been at your feet". It's a great opportunity to learn more about the history of one of the jewels of Aube's textile industry. Read on to hear more about the main features of the exhibition...

The show is devoted to the evolution of hosiery from 1819 to the present day. In particular, it focuses on shapes, patterns and different styles of motifs. You also have the chance to see the various advertising materials created to promote DD products: tights, men's socks, women's socks etc. Another section brings to life the background of Doré Doré. This includes a tribute to the family at the helm, and how the company shaped the industrial and social history of the town where it was established, Fontaine-les-Grès

Looking at socks from every angle

The layout of the Hosiery Museum has been specially reconfigured to demonstrate the different stages of production. This includes the company's social impact and the advances it has made in its use of technology. In another display, you can see how its image evolved in its publicity and marketing materials throughout its history. Indeed, DD is more than just a brand - it represents the best of French workmanship and expertise.

A company with a paternalistic approach

Founded in 1819 by Jean-Baptiste Doré, this family business based its production around human values. "Each of the Doré family heirs has added a stone to the building of this company and this brand", states Dominique Fiorano, the exhibition’s curator.
Throughout its 200-year history, the company’s successive managers have been keen to share the values of artisanal know-how, tradition and authenticity with the workers at the Fontaine-les-Grès factory in Aube. "Doré Doré really organised its structure so that its employees felt as happy as possible in the company. It meant they didn't want to look for work elsewhere", explains Stéphanie Drujon, Vice-President of Doré Doré Employees' Association. "They had their homes, schools and shops on-site so they could live as close as possible to their employer."
Indeed, this was the French equivalent of Bourneville near Birmingham or New Lanark in Central Scotland.

Proud of its history, but looking to the future 

Once the Golden Age of the "socqette" (no-show sock) had passed, production unfortunately collapsed. The brand implemented a social plan in 2003, with manufacturing ceasing in France in 2011 and moving instead to Italy. Today, Doré Doré’s high-end socks and tights are designed and manufactured through careful collaboration between the French and Italian teams. In this way, the DD initials can continue to symbolise the epitome of French style and elegance.
